NEW LAW FOR DRIVING 125 CC MOTORBIKES IN SPAIN

12 February 24

New year, New rules! The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in Spain, begins 2024 with the intention of continuing to reduce the number of daily accidents on Spanish roads. The DGT is the is the responsible entity for the execution of road policy on state-owned roads in Spain.

The DGT's annual balance of traffic accidents reflects a 37% increase in motorists killed on the roads in 2023, which leads to measures being taken for this group. It is the only means of transportation that has seen its accident rate increase. To try to reduce this trend, the DGT is going to implement various measures aimed at motorcyclists.

At this moment in time, in January 2024 in Spain, those drivers who have a car license and at least three years of experience have the possibility of driving motorcycles up to 125 cc. However, the DGT's intention is for this to change: a mandatory course will have to be obtained. At the moment, the date of entry into force is not known, but it is possible that it will be before the end of 2024.

The extent of this new law has not yet been revealed, nor has the nature of the course. However, voices say it will be a theory and practical course. We will keep our eyes peeled for more information on the publication of the new law.

This law will not only change the fact that in Spain you will need a proper motorbike licence to drive a 125 cc motorbike, but it also includes other smaller changes. These smaller changes are to increase safety for motorbike drivers. These changes affect helmets, the only accepted helmets will be the full-faced helmets, and all bike users will need to wear approved gloves.
